My Capstone Project

A 3-Step Process

Step #1: Interviews

The first step in beginning my capstone project was to virtually interview multiple Athletic Directors (ADs) across the DIII level. I emailed roughly sixty different ADs all over the country, most of whom I did not know prior to contact. I received just under thirty replies and conducted twenty-eight interviews in total.

Step #2: Analysis

After conducting all virtual interviews throughout the winter of 2020-2021, I began to analyze the responses and look for any common statements or beliefs. I chose to highlight three questions I asked every AD I met with:

  1. What was their career path to their current position?

  2. What leadership principles are most important to them?

  3. What are their priorities as an Athletic Director?

Step #3: Content Creation

After choosing three questions to showcase, it was time to create the content for you to consume! This content included the portfolio you are currently viewing, as well as a fifteen page paper on the capstone project.

“I’m 100% on board with the life lessons you can learn from losing, but I don’t want to get a PhD in it."

Mike Whalen - Wesleyan University Athletic Director

"Sometimes being a leader means watching, not doing anything. It all depends on the environment you’re in."

Mike Wisecup - Colby College Athletic Director
